Official Public Holidays in Thailand
New Year’s Day – Jan 1 (Wed), 2020
Western New Year, held on the 31st of December to the 1st of January, is the official Thailand holiday to celebrate New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. This holiday is celebrated with dance, music, and food. People visit Buddhist temples to make offerings and perform religious ceremonies on New Year’s first morning.
Makha Bucha or Magha Puja – Feb 10 (Mon), 2020
Mukha Bucha is celebrated on the full moon night in the third lunar month. This holiday represents the day when almost twelve hundred disciples of Buddha came together to hear a sermon that taught the central principles of Buddhist teachings.
Chakri Day – Apr 6 (Mon), 2020
The official name of the day is “King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great Day and Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day.” People commemorate the Chakri Dynasty and Kings. The king and his royal family members participate in the religious ceremony to pay respects to their ancestors.
Songkran – Apr 13-15, 2020
Songkran is also known as Thai New Year and is celebrated between the 13th of April and the 15th of April. It is followed by a celebration that is three days long. This day is linked with bringing rain for a healthy harvest, fertility, and purifying items for the New Year. People splash water on each other, and this activity has turned into a water fight that spans over multiple days.
Labour Day – May 1 (Fri), 2020
Labor day is among other official Thailand holidays that is observed on the 1st of May. Schools and Businesses remain closed on this day.
H.M. King’s Coronation Day – May 5 (Tue), 2020
Coronation day is held on the 5th of May to celebrate the coronation of the current ruling King of Thailand.
Visakha Bucha Day – May 6 (Wed), 2020
Visakha Puja is celebrated on the 4th of June to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. It is one of the major Buddhist holidays.
H.M Queen’s Birthday – Jun 3 (Wed), 2020
This holiday celebrates the birthday of the current queen Suthida. She was born on June 3rd, 1979.
Asahna Bucha Day – Jul 6 (Mon), 2020
Asahna Bucha Day is held either in July or at the start of August. This holiday celebrates the first sermon of the Buddha.
H.M. Queen Mother’s Birthday – Aug 12 (Wed), 2020
The 12th of August marks the celebration of The H.M. Queen Mother’s Birthday and Thailand’s Mother Day as well.
The Passing of King Bhumibol – Oct 13 (Tue), 2020
The King Bhumibol, Rama IX, passed away on October 13th, 2016 after the longest reign of Thailand from June 9th, 1946. People show condolence to the previous King keeping silence at the exact time he passed away, 3:52 pm.
Chulalongkorn Memorial Day – Oct 23 (Fri), 2020
This Thailand Holiday is celebrated on the 23rd of October to pay tribute to the life of King Chulalongkorn.
The King Bhumibol’s Birthday – Dec 7 (Mon), 2020
The King’s Birthday and Father’s Day is celebrated on the 5th of December to commemorate the birthday of Thailand’s king and the National Father’s Day of Thailand.
Constitution Day – Dec 10 (Thu), 2020
Constitution Day is held on the 10th of December to celebrate the day when Thailand became a constitutional monarchy in the year 1932. On this day, the constitution of Thailand was signed.
