Vietnam Public Holidays
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs of Vietnam (MOLISA) manages the official public holidays of Vietnam. If there is a public holiday on either Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is considered as a paid holiday. In short, there is a list of each holiday date in 2020 and the meaning of the day in Vietnam. New Year’s Day
The 1st of January marks New Year’s Day where people gather to celebrate the new beginnings that the New Year brings with it. So, people celebrate New Year’s Day nationwide, and people plan special outings. During the holiday, the streets are decorated with street lights and food. Streets serve special treats on this special occasion.
Lunar New Year’s Day, Tet Holiday
Tet Holiday lasts for seven to nine days, starting from the 23rd of January to the 29th of January. Tet Nguyen Dan, also known as Tet, is considered the most popular and most significant festival of the year in Vietnam. It is the first day of the first month in the Lunar Calendar. During the holiday season, people celebrate this holiday with great zeal and zest and lots of food. In 2020, Tet Eve will commence on Friday, the 24th of January. The 24th of January is also the Vietnamese New Year’s Eve. Saturday, the 25th of January marks Tet Nguyen Dan that is also known as Vietnamese New Year.
Gio to Hung Vuong Festival
The Hùng Kings’ Temple Festival is a Vietnamese festival that is celebrated every year from the 8th to the 11th day of the third lunar month to commemorate the memory of the Hùng Vương, also called as Hùng Kings. Hung Kings were the traditional founders of the Vietnamese nation. The major festival day in their name, which is also a public holiday in Vietnam since 2007, is celebrated on the 10th day of the third lunar month. In 2020, Hung Kings’ festival will start on Tuesday, the 31st of March and end on Thursday, the 2nd of April.
Liberation/Reunification Day Holiday
The liberation Day, also known as Reunification Day, or the Victory Day, marks an official public holiday in Vietnam and is celebrated on the 30th of April. This holiday denoted the event when Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops caught Saigon on the 30th of April, 1975. In 2020, Liberation Day will fall on Thursday.
International Labor Day
International Labor Day is an official public holiday that is celebrated on the 1st of May every year. Businesses and schools remain closed, and people celebrate this day to honor the labor force of the world. In 2020, International Labor Day will fall on Friday.
National Day, Independence Day of Vietnam
Vietnamese celebrate National Day annually on the 2nd of September. National Day marks a public holiday in Vietnam that also commemorates President Hồ Chí Minh reading the Declarations of independence of Vietnam at Ba Đình Square in Hanoi on the 2nd of September 1945. People celebrate this day enthusiastically with celebrations on a national level. In 2020, National Day will fall on Wednesday.
